Tower of Silence in Yazd

On the southern outskirts of Yazd sit the evocative Zoroastrian Towers of Silence. In accordance with Zoroastrian beliefs about the purity of the earth, dead bodies were not buried, but left in these uncovered stone towers so that vultures could pick the bones clean. Such towers have not been used since the '60s.

At the foot of the hills on the southern outskirts of Yazd are several disused Zoroastrian buildings, including a defunct well, a water cistern and two small badgirs (windtowers or wind catchers), a kitchen and a lavatory. The modern Zoroastrian cemetery is nearby.

Amir Chakhmaq Complex

When in Yazd, Iran, you shouldn’t miss your chance to visit the princely Amir Chakhmaq Complex which dates back to the 15th century and is known as Yazd’s architectural centrepiece.

Located in the heart of the city, it showcases an imposing three-storey façade adorned with beautifully symmetrical iwans that light up and glow after sunset. It is one of the largest structures in the country that was used in the commemorative ceremonies for Imam Hossein’s death.

Not to miss are the sweets and ice cream shops located near the square.


Saheb A Zaman Zurkhaneh

A popular tourist attraction in Yazd Iran, Zurkhaneh literally translates to House of Strength. It is located in a historic building on the northern side of Amir Chakhmaq Square. It is the place to visit that will allow you to observe the practitioners of this unusual dancing-cum-weightlifting activity that is steeped in Shi’ite belief.
